Electric Bikes

Like me, my father has always been a bit of a gadget fan boy, although he leans less toward technology than I do. One of his recent aquisitions was a was a pair of Lectric XP 2.0 bikes that I had a chance to toodle around with.

After a few rides, I must say that I am sold on the concept and can honestly say that I see a future where most if not all bikes sold are electric powered. The riding experience was quite eye opening for a variety of reasons including how well the power assist meshes with manual peddling, the truly massive range, and well the overall fun factor. The cover image is of a museum that was an out of range ride for a casual weekend biker, but an absolute breeze on the electric bike for my sister who basically doesn’t ride at all.

It’s not going to happen in the near future, but I definitely can see myself getting an electric mountain bike at some point!

6/22/2022 – Sad update to this post. These two bikes were recently stolen overnight. Evidently the thieves cased my father’s garage and snagged these. Nothing else in the garage was touched. No cameras on my father’s property, so no real evidence. He also didn’t record the serial numbers for the bikes and they were brand new, so no real identifying marks. Basically the police told him you are SOL because even if the DO find them, without any way of identifying them as stolen or even who they belong to there’s nothing the police can do. With my bike, I have ALL the serial numbers recorded and there are plenty of identifying characteristics due to the… ahem… crashes it’s endured, and the customization. So, long story short, record those serial numbers, take photos, customize/make the bike your own, and if it’s an expensive bike, consider getting something like a Tile or Apple Tag and concealing it on the bike somewhere.

One final sad footnote to the story… because they were eBikes, my father’s Farmer’s agent told him that they were considered “motor vehicles” and therefore they aren’t covered under his home owner’s insurance policy. Note that the MVA in his state does NOT require them to be registered, so to mee this is literally the insurance company stealing from my father. I told him he should drop them immediately, but I doubt he will.
