The African Hyrax is a small rodent like creature found in rocky areas of the Serengeti. Apparently artificial rock works fine because our hotel is overrun by them. They are cute and keep to themselves, munching on the landscaping, so no worries. Fun fact, elephants are its closest genetic cousin.
The room certainly doesn’t disappoint! The bed is especially welcome as the last Serena basically had a box spring for a bed. The ability to brush one’s teeth with faucet water and open one’s mouth in the shower is also nice…little things.

Yesterday we flew from Ngorongoro Crater to the center of the Serengeti on a fairly new Cessna Grand Caravan. Prior takeoff the pilot asked if anyone had flight experience. Saw a group of baboons all hanging out by this tree. We soon found out why… they had caught sent of a leopard on the prowl. A few in our group ahead of our Land Cruiser saw it as it crossed the road and disappeared into the tall Serengeti grass.
Made it to the 4-Seasons Serengeti. On the way there from the airstrip, we saw a number of beasties, including these Grand Gazelle. The wildlife on the Serengeti is very impressive!
Had an outstanding game drive in the crater. Weather was absolutely perfect and we saw four out of the big five animals. This guy kept trying to sneak in and steal our lunch this afternoon in the crater. In spite of his best efforts, we certainly didn’t starve. Tauck tours put on a beautiful spread for us right in the middle of the crater.
